In order to comply with the Water Quality Act of 1987, Vancouver Barracks, a Federal facility that discharges stormwater associated with industrial activity, is required to obtain a permit, under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, to control the quality of their stormwater discharge. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set up permit-application requirements that include watershed, topographic, and hydrologic information for each facility and the location of outfalls. Information is also required on past hazardous waste spills (if any), and the monitoring of all outfalls during a storm.
To help the facility prepare its permit application, the USGS is collecting, compiling, and analyzing watershed, topographic, and hydrologic information for Vancouver Barracks and monitoring the outfalls. The information also will be used to prepare a Stormwater Prevention Plan and develop Best Management Practices for Vancouver Barracks.
