The Colville River Basin is a 1,007-square-mile area located in Stevens County in northeastern Washington. Following the guidelines of Washington's Watershed Management Act of 1998, water-resource planning in the basin is being conducted within a Water Resources Inventory Area (WRIA).
Local citizens representing a wide range of water resource interest groups, together with local, state, and federal agencies, have organized to address water resource concerns within the Colville River Basin. The local planning team is working together to develop a watershed plan that will address water quantity, water quality, and in-stream flows.
In cooperation with the Stevens County Conservation District, the USGS is conducting a study of the basin's ground-water resources. The study includes mapping the extent and thickness of aquifers, determining how parts of the ground-water system interacts with streams and rivers, estimating a water budget for the basin, and developing a computer model of the ground-water flow system.
