WA161 - Water Resources of the Skokomish Indian Reservation - Completed FY1973

Problem - The Skokomish Indian Reservation covers 8 sq. mi. In the lower end of the Skokomish Valley, in the center of mason county. A previous report, "Geology And Related Ground Water Occurrence, Southeastern Mason County, Washington," by Dee Molenaar and J. B. Noble, contains some information on which to build. However, more detailed information on the ground-water system and a description of the surface-water is needed for protection of the Indians' rights and development of their overall resources.

Objectives - Furnish information on the flow characteristics of all streams on the reservation, determine the extent of upstream salt water flow in the Skokomish River, and the quality of surface waters. furnish information on the ground-water system, including present and potential salt-water intrusion, so an orderly and efficient development of this valuable resource can be accomplished by the Skokomish Indians.

Approach -Miscellaneous discharge measurements will be made to determine flow characteristics. The flow record for Skokomish River near Potlatch will be statistically analyzed. A map of areas flooded will be prepared and the river salinity profile determined. Test well locations will be determined and about 10 test holes augered. These and present wells will be test pumped. The report will include a semi-quantitative appraisal of the amount of water available, its variation, chemical and sanitary quality, the present use of water, and existence or potential for salt water intrusion into the fresh ground water.
